I get flummoxed by trying to think up titles for blog posts. This year I'm opting for numbers, I'm hoping it may even encourage me to blog more now the whole 'what do I call my post?' dilemma is dealt with.

I'm starting this year with some things I should have blogged about last year. A couple of exciting knitting projects that made it onto the tv. First came this little fellow who got used in some links on cbeebies.

Then I got offered the chance to make a jumper with Hacker on the front for CBBC. Knitting a man sized jumper in the 3 weeks before Christmas was a slightly fraught experience but I'm really pleased I did it, and am very pleased with how it turned out.

Just for my niece, proof to the world that she's worn the same jumper as Iain from CBBC!

Here's hoping that 2012 brings some more fun commissions!

I vowed not to leave it a year before I blog again and I've done it.

Hurrah!

Life has been a bit hectic but between it all I have managed to

make mini me's.

First came a Daddy doll

(the resemblance to Daddy is uncanny)

Then a string of 40th birthdays prompted birthday mini me's

I'm particularly pleased with my sister-in-law below.

She has clothes just like that!

Most people seem to like being immortalised in wool.

I often find myself wallowing in the dreariness that comes with being a woman at home. Feeling like I am the only person who has ever experienced the frustrations and exhaustion of mothering and general housework monotony. This is ridiculous I know, I just need to chat with my Mum, Sister, friends, heck, half the population to find echoes of these feelings and yet there are still times when I feel like it is only me struggling. It is always relieving to come across women I admire and find inspiring who admit to feeling the same sometimes!

I don't always feel like this, I hasten to add! I appreciate the small joys (and large) of being able to watch my children grow, but I do find the mental and physical demands (especially of a one year old) particularly draining.

On days like these I really have to remind myself to just focus on the small things like this beautiful flower peeking out from the weeds in the garden. Yes, the house may be a mess but there are lots of little bits of loveliness if I just realign my focus and keep telling myself

' This too shall pass'

The summer is flying by.

We have been visiting my Granny in beautiful Cellardyke.

Sometimes I wish Cornwall and Scotland weren't so bloomin far apart!

I have been baking more than knitting.

I have to produce a pirate cake and a mermaid cake

in the next month. I'm getting a little nervous!

Still, I'm rather pleased with the bookworm!

The Easter holidays were very busy and full of fun.

A Hello Kitty cake pleased a certain five (5!) year old,

as did the Hello Kitty sunglasses!

Fun was had by all.

A change is as good as a rest....

We are back from our family holiday.

This was not a 'put your feet up' kinda holiday.

There was swimming everyday, and lots

of walking through the beautiful Longleat woodland.

Plus two small children who decided to wake at

5.30am EVERY DAY!

But we had a great time, and I certainly feel refreshed

and ready to Spring clean and face the world again.

We also visited Bristol zoo and saw this lovely fellow

(Mr R's favourite)

This very cute little fellow (my favorite!)

And lots of beautiful butterflies (Imogen's favourite)

It is just as well I have refreshed my spirits.

Spring is the season of many birthdays in my family.

In April my little girl will be 5... I'm not too worried about

her celebrations as her knew Hello Kitty obsession

makes for an easy theme and gift solution!

Just 6 short days after her my baby will be 1!

Ellie the Elephant

What happens when you take a photo through 'magic glasses'?

You get this very funky kaleidoscope effect!

It amused me for hours, I do love the simple things in life!

I have finished the elephant ordered by Imogen.

She has named her Ellie....so original.

This is better than naming it Imogen which is what she likes

to call most things at the moment. I cannot convince her

that variety is a good thing, especially with names.

Having various toys all called Imogen gets very confusing!

I am really enjoying crochet. I've got the hang of it now

and it's very satisfying. I think it's a lot better for toys

than knitting as the fabric is much denser. Having said that

I do have a special place in my heart for knitting!

The next thing I would like to try is squares,

if I can achieve something like this I will be very pleased.

Half Term

To end the most wonderful 1st swap experience was this scrumptious yarn.

I have often gazed at Manos yarn in magazines but have never come up with an excuse to treat myself, and now I don't have to.

The only dilemma now is what to knit with it!

....my partner sent to me, a lovely new book!

I love craft books, even if I never make anything from them I love looking at the pictures.

They make me happy!

I am also the proud new owner of a scrumptious hot water bottle cover. The colour is a gorgeous blue and it's made in organic merino wool.

the deep, rich smell of chocolate is wonderful. I think a chocolate sauce made with this would be rather wicked! Mmmmm!

A Satisfactory Sunday

I am very excited about my first swap.

I have always watched swaps on other blogs with interest

but have been too nervous to join in.

However the Seven Days of Specialness swap appealed

as I find February terribly dreary. All the fun of winter has passed

and I just want Spring to hurry up and arrive.

So here's my parcel all ready to go in the post tomorrow!

I love this hat!

I've knitted one before for my nephew and the pattern is so simple yet satisfying I thought I'd make Oscar one.

It's a very easy 4 row repeat but the striping looks very effective and it makes a lovely fabric with a lot of stretch. I'd like to try knitting a little tank top using the same pattern ( another project to put on the 'To Do' list!)

Unfortunately the recipient does not share my feelings.

Oh no, he cannot get it off his head fast enough.

HUMPH!

Seven Things

I have been tagged by Philippa to write about 7 things I love. I have been mulling it over and it's very hard not to just reel off food, knitting, music etc..... I've been trying to think of little things (that don't make me sound too mad!)

Here we go then.....

Quotes: I used to 'collect' quotes as a teenager. I still have a big red book filled with all sorts of snippets from books I've read. A little cheesy perhaps but I do find them inspiring. I don't have a favourite but one that I happened upon recently is this

'better do a kindness at home than walk a thousand miles to burn incense'

The Dalai Lama

This made me smile....as a child I was taken along to all sorts of 'spiritual' gatherings which were thoroughly dull and usually involved too much incense, I'm inclined to agree with the Dalai Lama on this one.

Irn Bru: Now bare with me.....I don't mean the amber liquid itself but the memories and feelings that are evoked when I drink some. Irn Bru was the family 'treat' drink when I was little, preserved for birthdays and Christmas and trips to my Grandparents in Scotland. It still doesn't feel like a party to me if I haven't had some Irn Bru! Just the smell makes me feel about 7 years old and I am filled with happy memories. Much the same as a satsuma fills me with Christmas excitement.....satsumas DO smell like Christmas! I love that certain tastes and smells can evoke such feelings and while I don't get quite as excited about Christmas as I did when I was a small child I can still enjoy little flash backs with the help of my senses!

Stationery: Another thing I used to collect and still love. Notebooks, writing paper, pens, stickers. I love it all. As much as I love the internet there's nothing quite like receiving a letter in the post. That said I don't have to use my stationary to get pleasure from it. A bit like just looking at my yarn stash fills me with joy a pretty notebook just sitting on a shelf can do the same thing (I will never be a minimalist....I just like 'stuff'!)

Being alone: If you had asked me to describe myself before I had children I would have said I was bubbly and a bit of an extrovert, amongst other things. Now, I don't think that my basic personality has changed but I read something recently (I forget where) that clarified something in my head. The gist of what I read was that extroverts are people that recharge their batteries by being around other people while introverts are people that need to be alone to recharge. I'd never heard this way of describing it before but it made sense to me. I love company but after 4 years of having a small being with me pretty much 24/7 I do crave time alone. The snippets that I get here and there just feel like bliss and I lap them up. Not that I'm wishing my babies childhoods away but hey....something to look forward to in retirement!

Playing: One of the great things about being a parent is getting time to play. I love breaking out the playdough as much as Imogen. It's also given me the chance to knit toys....I love knitting small things. Luckily my husband is just as mature (ahem) as me. I found a Marvel Comic double

duvet cover that I got him for his birthday ( we both secretly love it!). Swinging on the swings in the park is another thing.....very therapeutic!

Plymouth Aquarium: I love this place. I could sit and watch the fish for hours. Especially the huge Atlantic Ocean tank.

Ermmmmm, struggling now!

Browsing a Thesaurus: I had actually forgotten how much I liked thesauruses until I started thinking about this post. When writing essays for my degree I would start looking for an alternative word and then get endlessly distracted by more interesting words. That's one of the things I love about English, there's just so many ways to say the same thing! I remember when I started learning Welsh (compulsory up to GCSE level where I went to school) that I was amazed at how little vocabulary there was in comparison...it did make it a bit easier to learn.

new tin, I acquired it from my Mother-in-Law .

School is open and I am glad.

Imogen is also pleased as she is now a full time pupil

and gets to take the all important packed lunch to school.

The house is calm, baby asleep and soup cooking. It now

feels like the New Year has started properly, after the false start of last week.

I am feeling good about 2010, I feel like I'm getting the

hang of this parenting thing now and am really enjoying it.

If I could find my camera I would leave you with a picture of the sleeping babe but I can't so I give you St Ives on a lovely (if a little chilly) day just after Christmas.....We had a lovely time walking on the beach and when we got back to the car discovered that for 2 hours the passenger door had been left wide open! Nothing was taken, the car was just a bit cold! Good ole honest Cornish folk!

In which I acheive some knitting and learn to crochet

Well that's Christmas done for another year. I love the run up to Christmas and all the festivities but there is also something exciting about packing it all away and wondering what the year ahead will bring. I am enjoying the structure that the school run brings ( the enjoyment will wane as the term progresses I'm sure!). I have managed to squeeze in a little crafting. A good friend gave birth to a little baby boy on the 27th of Dec and so a cheery winter cardi was in order

I am also very pleased that I have finally got the hang of crochet. For a long time I have looked at 'How to' guides and I've even had people show me how to do it and although I could understand it in my head I could never quite get my hands to do what was required. I have tried and tried ( I have lots of lovely crochet patterns going to waste because of this inability to master the craft...very frustrating!). Spurred on by my sister's gift to me of an amigurumi book I have managed to produce a tortoise (as requested my husband and daughter....although daughter has now asked for a pink elephant....all good practise!)

Ta Da!

A Christmas Gnome that I donated to a school fair.....my mantelpiece looks bare without him so I may have to knit another!

The shawl was a fantastically easy pattern from Simply Knitting magazine. A four row repeat with 3 of the rows being knit or purl and just one row to shape the waves. I loved knitting it! I used this yarn and had enough left over to knit some rather nice gloves.....pictures of those will wait for another post

The gnome is of course an Alan Dart classic. I had to make the beard silver as he was to be sold on the 'silver' table at the school Christmas fair. I am pleased to say he found a good home very quickly.

A new beginning is needed after such a long absence!

What can I say but life took over. Since my last post such a lot has happened, the most significant being the arrival of this little fellow.

Oscar arrived on the 17th of April and is such a wonderful little man.

There is much crafting to be blogged about, especially as I have been making use of my sewing machine. A lovely christmas present from my dear hubby. For now though this is me just getting back into the blogging of things!

Sunshine on a rainy day!

January in Britain seems to last forever.....it's grey and rainy, Christmas is over and pay day seems a long way off. There isn't anything to look forward too......until a parcel arrives! I love parcels and there's nothing like a parcel of wool to lift the spirits! I was waiting for some better light to take pictures but like that's going to happen any time soon!!

So thank you Christabel of the lovely Rhubarb Supreme. My first give away win was fantastic!

I now have the perfect excuse to try knitting some socks!I'm quite excited actually. My Mum, a seasoned sock knitter is coming to visit soon so I may wait so that I have some guidance....I'd hate to waste the beautiful wool! Watch this space though.....I'll keep tabs on the sock progress!

I haven't spent all of January moping. I have actually been knitting away. My dearest Sister is about to give birth to No 2. I can't resist a good ole baby cardigan!

Looks like Shrek and Binka can't resist them either!

Come on little nephew....you can come out now, your cardigan awaits!!

After finishing the cardigan I was about to start a couple of other presents for birthdays coming up when Imogen sidled over and said 'Mummy.......knit something for me, Pleeeeeease!' After a heart melting look I was unable to resist and spent the next half an hour looking through every knitted toy book I own. She settled on the brown haired doll from one of my birthday gift books, she was very insistent about the brown hair. She proved to be a quick and easy knit. The next day I'd got this far.......

The day after that 'baby Imogen' was with us. I did suggest other girls names but my girl decided that her name was best!!

New Year New Knitting!

Happy New Year everyone!
Well with the advent calendar behind me (can't quite believe it)I can't help my mind wondering to this years knitting projects.....actually I'm thinking Christmas presents. The Sirdar Bigga in moss stitch was so scrummy and soft that I'm thinking scarves...predictable yes, but very useful plus with the added bonus of being quick and easy to knit.
After getting such gorgeous knitted toy books for my birthday I quite fancy making a few for nieces and nephews. Hmmmmm, if I start spreading the cost of yarn now I could probably afford it!Oooo If only I could buy it all now, I love buying wool.

Knitting goodies

First of all thank you all for the birthday wishes!I had a great day.....we took Imogen to the cinema for the first time and watched Enchanted, it was great!

Now onto the goodies!!!!My lovely family treated me to these lovely books

Now I'm the first to admit my photography skills are not the best....I apologise. In fact I never realised just how bad my photos were until I stared blogging but I'm sure you get the gist!

The advent decorations are nearly finished.....I know I know. I'm cutting it a bit fine but I just have a little santa to knit now-hurrah! I really hope I'm knitting an heirloom here, it's taken long enough!

Talking of heirlooms I found one today and gave it a polish

This was my Grandpa's. When I was little I used to look forward to trips upto Scotland so much and Grandpa's sweetie dish was part of that. He always had this on the table next to his chair and I loved sneeking sweets out of it! I found it today and thought just for Christmas it might be nice to get it out and use it!It's lovely seeing it again......of course I had to fill it with sweets.

Introducing my favourite little decoration so far....I love this wee angel, she's so sweet!I can't wait to see Imogen's face when she sees this one.

The bag is also complete!Hurrah, Christmas presents are done and finished.Ok so I only made one but you've got to start small with these things!

I'm rather excited as it's my birthday in a few days and I have a sneaky suspicion that my family have been buying off my amazon wish list which consists of erm....... knitting books and craft books and more craft books!!!I'll be sure to share all the crafty goodness with you folks!

On the first day of Advent

The Advent Calander!Ta dah.

This was a joint project with my Mother in Law, she was knitting the pockets and the backing while I did the decorations. In the middle of November she suddenly needed to have an emergency eye operation so the last few weeks have seen me knit, knit knitting and then assembling the calender......phew, I'm so glad it's finished.

Here are a few more of the decorations.

Here we have a bell, christmas pudding, lantern, christmas tree and candy cane among other things. All this is an Alan Dart pattern. I love it, especially the decorations. I'll definitely be knitting some more for friends and family, just not this year!!

Also hot off the needles is my Mother's Christmas present

This will be a bag when it's all put together. I thought the green fabric would make a really nice lining for it. I LOVED knitting this. I don't know what it was but the combination of the Sirdar Bigga wool, Brittany needles, and the moss stitch was just so satisfying. Plus it was a quick grower which is always nice!
It's really beginning to feel seasonal now!After my Christmas meal out with all my other 'Mum' friends tonight I shall really be feeling in the mood.

Halloween Happiness

Ever since I read Laura Ingalls Wilder books as a girl not only have a desperately wanted to go back in time to pioneering America but I've been intrigued by 'pumpkin pie'. We don't have it over here in Britain, at least I've never seen it. I think it's been about 18 years since I first read Little House in the Big Woods and today I made my first pumpkin pie!!It was so exciting and really yummy!

I got the recipe here, it was so easy, I'll be making it again for sure.

Ahhh what fun. I love doing things with Imogen for the first time, this was her first pumpkin carving and the first time she'd seen The Nightmare Before Christmas, it's so much fun sharing her excitement!

Lastly, I can't decide whether or not to do the traditions exchange over at Montessori by Hand
I've never done an exchange before but watched them with interest...Ooooo I just don't know if I've got enough traditiony stuff to share....plus more knitting, it is tempting though.

I can't believe it's been 11 days since a post, that is serious slacking....apologies to blog land. A poor defense is visiting family and time spent enjoying this

Anyhoo, here I am. This wonderful post at noodles and doodles inspired me to turn the T.V. and get going! I'm not just lagging behind in blogging, my ambitious list of 'things to make before Christmas' is shrinking!

Back in....hmmm I dunno say June I thought ....Yeah I can

I've started them all, which perhaps was a mistake, I now feel paralised by the bags of projects stashed around the living room. Then in my stupidness last night I started knitting a dress for Imogen's doll?????I know, I know, I panicked, I needed something to knit and I couldn't possibly do something constructive like FINISH something.

I really need to get a move on with the advent calendar, I keep thinking I have til Christmas...er no Laura advent starts on the 1st of December, and these little fellas need 22 other pals to fill all the pockets up. I hereby pledge to at least finish the advent calendar and post a picture to prove it!!!The dinosaurs and finger puppets have been scrapped and baby cardi's...well he's not due until January so maybe I'll cut myself some slack and just aim to complete them by the due date!

Arty Party Things

Imogen loves doing arty crafty things, although she gets a little muddled and asks for arty party things! I love it as we both sit there surrounded by paper, glue, paint or whatever takes our fancy and play around.Our latest creation was a real joint effort to make a dolly bedroom.....who needs a doll's house when you have cardboard boxes lying around. Imogen's favourite part were the 'Night Garden' posters.

Another favourite pass time is making butterflies which I love. I wish I could keep them all but of course you have to pick and choose. At least it's something to do with loo roll tubes!

I leave you with violent pink T-Rex. On my last trip to the wool shop Imogen insisted on adding a ball of this shocking pink wool to my basket. Being a wuss I relented wondering what on earth I was going to do with it but as it turns out Imogen had plenty in mind including this dinosaur from one of my many Jean Greenhowe books. I actually really like it although I have yet to find a way to attach arms, legs and heads that I a) find easy and b) doesn't look as amateurish as my current attempts, heads are particularly tricky. Any ideas on this one would be greatly appreciated!

Happy Days

What a lovely weekend. I had an old school friend come to stay so a lot of time was spent reminiscing about friends and teenage years, it was a lot of fun. We also went to the beach. You can't have a visitor in Cornwall and not take them to the beach.

Sand castles and sand turtles were made. It was lovely. I could just sit by the sea all day, I find the sound of the waves so relaxing it's therapeutic. Plus Imogen runs around and plays with minimal input from moi so all are happy! It also gave Imogen a chance to try out the new winter hat.

I love 2x2 rib. Not the most inspired choice but sometimes simplicity is the best option. It's just so super stretchy and snug.....Mmmmmm. Imogen likes it too which is a bonus, she seems to have a very over developed sense of taste for a 2 year old and if an article of clothing isn't to her liking, it will not be worn, for love nor money (or even sweets!)

The cats (or KITTENS as we are instructed to call them) are settling in fine. I'll try not to over do the kitty pictures but I'll leave you with a couple of pictures of our new additions.

Kitten Heaven!!!

From the ages of 5 to 9 I think I prayed everyday in the hope that God would soften my parents' stance on the 'No Pets' rule. That prayer was never answered. Now, with my own house and my own money I have pets!!!! I am stupidly happy. It's actually really nice to feel the kind of excitement that i felt as a kid the week leading up to Christmas or my birthday. It's kind of sad when life stops being full of new and wonderful things to discover. I am relishing this feeling and long may it last!

May be there's a resolution hiding in there to rediscover the excitement in everyday life. That's one of the things I love about being a Mum, being able to see things through new eyes, watching someone doing things for the first time. That and buying all the toys I wanted as a kid but never got!!!!!!

This is Monsieur cat, one of the favourite things I've knitted. He's a Lucinda Guy pattern and I just love him.
Well in the name of learning the ropes I'm going to try linking. I'd like to mention some blogs that have kept me going, amused and inspired over the last couple of years. The great yarn harlot
has spurred my knitting obsession to new hights. Crazy Aunt Purl can always be relied on to make me laugh a lot! Wise Craft inspires me and makes me want to make quilts and do patchwork but I still haven't found the guts to cut up any fabric.....I've bought the stuff, I have countless books but just can't make that next step! I was very excited to find a fellow Brit when I came across Quilt While You're Still Ahead , I was starting to think that all the craftiness was across the pond!And Twelve22 just makes me hungry!!!!There are so many more that I could and should list. Maybe I'll work out how to do a side bar thingy.
Well, I think that'll do for starters. I shall endeavor to post regularly but I was always one of those kids who started a diary, kept it diligently for a few weeks then it all went down the pan so I'm not making any promises!Hopefully I will have a working camera again soon. Mine died,how sad, especially as we are getting kittens on Saturday and I will need to take lots of photos!!!Anyway, watch this space for kittens, knitting (I'm into dinosaurs, baby cardi's and Christmas decorations at the mo!)and general rambling!

Well, I've decided to stop my lurking in blog land and join in the fun. I found blogs after I gave birth to my daughter and they were a real life line. They kept me sane and feeling like a human being. I love the idea of being part of such a big community (plus I'm just plain nosey!!) The small glimpses into other peoples lives are fun and inspiring......I have loved my 2 years of lurking round but now is the time to join in.
I must admit the majority of blogs I read are crafty but I'm not going to put my blog in the same catagory. Mainly because my crafty skills are not really worthy of devoting a whole blog to but also because I like the idea of consciously taking the time to think about my day(s) and my life and writing about it. It may not be wildly exciting or interesting but it's mine and I'm not forcing anyone to read!
It's very weird writing a post, I'm used to reading the finished article with all the links and pictures etc I'm still working out how to do all that fancy stuff so you'll have to bare with me!
